With security cameras everywhere, chances are that there is a ton of video footage of you and your loved ones, your possessions, and your whereabouts. It is not hard to imagine why or how this has happened over the years. Security cameras or closed circuit television systems are installed at almost all public places, commercial establishments, and even at places that are otherwise deemed private. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take the instance of your neighborhood store. There are likely to be a few cameras inside to monitor all the aisles, there would be a few at the payment counters, and there would be a few outside. Even if you are not inside and just passing by the store, there will be video footage of your movement. Think of the malls, the multiplexes, the parking lots, the driveways, the major thoroughfares, and the cameras at every business premise. Today, almost every office has security cameras. They are installed strategically to monitor as large a space as possible. Many companies or commercial establishments opt for blanket coverage with no blind spot. In other words, there is not even a tiny spot in a commercial premise where you are not being watched. In effect, you are being caught on camera at all times when you are at these places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trouble with these security cameras is that they infringe on privacy. Security cameras used by the state and federal governments, law enforcement agencies, and other public departments are primarily for security, and they are sanctioned by legislation. Private security cameras used by companies, commercial establishments, or any random security agency in public places are not exactly for the security of people but for the safekeeping of the assets of that enterprise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Should your privacy be compromised for the safekeeping of a company\u2019s interests? Should you be caught on camera without permission and, at times, without even being aware? Should you be caught on camera at all? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are questions that keep cropping up from time to time. Proponents consider the compromise on privacy as a necessity to enhance security. Critics argue that security systems don\u2019t stop or prevent crimes. They are only helpful in hindsight. There are instances when security cameras help in solving major and minor crimes. There are also instances when footage from private cameras used in public places has been misused. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apparently, these security measures are a double-edged sword. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
